Palace Electric

A cinema at the heart of a landmark building located in a rapidly evolving precinct.

DesignOffice worked with Palace Cinemas to design the interior for the eight screen independent cinema, which opened in early 2013.

Patrons arrive at the box office cafe, which fronts onto Phillip Law Street. This open space provides a spacious and daylight-filled venue for food, drink and tickets, open from morning until night. A multi-media wall of woven electrical cable animates the transition from this box office cafe, down into the subterranean glamour of the Prosecco Bar.

A custom-designed carpet flows from this area through to all of the auditoriums beyond. The bar is anchored by a dynamic neon crown that is suspended above the circular bar to form the crux of the lounge. Upholstered banquettes in watermelon and citrus hues line the curved perimeter of the space, set against the backdrop of a multi-layered translucent fabric screen.

DesignOffice extended the electric thread from the Prosecco Bar through to the auditoriums with a series of custom-designed auditorium numbers. Edged in solid timber frames, these large scale numerals layer neon tubes, glass, printed films and solid graphic forms to provide punchy and playful signage for the individual cinema screens.
