The client brief called for a design approach which would transform a former retail news agency into a multi-purpose flexible space for media-based workshops, presentations and events.
The irregular floor plan is given definition and dynamism through the insertion of new walls, wall linings and tiered seating to allow for flexibility for a variety of uses and media based workshop formats.
The volume is given definition through use of a series of controlled datums which focus the eye at screen level and add visual clarity to the space. Natural cork provides an acoustically absorbent lining which doubles as pin-up for workshop style meetings.
The room is anchored by a suite of fixed elements such as central tables, screens and tiered perimeter. A layer of flexible furniture elements, stools, chairs and side tables, can be added as needed, or stored in the back of house area when the space is accommodating larger groups.
The material palette is deliberately natural and tactile, mixing oak, rubber, wool and cork with strong and saturated hues as a counterpoint to the technologically advanced and largely monochromatic facilities and equipment provided.
