A dynamically connected suite of spaces to facilitate and enhance the work lives of an inner city creative community
More Information Less InformationThe Commons Surry Hills transforms the lower levels of an existing building into a split-level co-working space by connecting a ground floor retail space to the commercial floor above. Occupying 1600sqm in a vibrant inner-city precinct, the brief called for a creative workspace that encouraged connection whilst also being functional and inspiring.
The site offered many opportunities – a unique shopfront, high concrete ceilings, abundant glazing and sufficient ground floor ceiling height to accommodate a new mezzanine.
The design centres on the vertical play of volumes, embracing the existing building’s raw bones, and shaping a dynamic journey through a connected suite of functional spaces.
Private offices line the majority of the perimeter, creating a pinwheel around the central reception, enhancing a sense of hospitality and connection. Intuitive circulation connects convivial and comfortable spaces which enhance a domestic, hotel-like sensibility, whilst fostering opportunities for interaction.
The cork clad staircase punches through the new slab opening connecting the ground floor cafe to a raised lounge, mezzanine podcast studio, sunken snug and elevated street-facing hot desks creating a dynamic spatial interplay. Communal spaces are strategically employed to facilitate the connection and collaboration that defines The Commons’ creative clientele.
The project embraces modern working patterns, providing diverse and connected spaces that blur public and private; facilitating work and fostering creativity.
