Dessein Concept Showroom

An ephemeral and relocatable Concept Store to showcase an Australian-designed furniture collection.

The brief from Dessein Furniture hinged around the conceptual idea of 10 Degrees – a reference to the angle of the sun at the beginning and end of the day. These moments are associated with the uniquely Australian light quality at dawn and dusk and the frequently convivial nature of our engagements at these times.

DesignOffice responded to the brief with the creation of 2 planes of chromatically considered light sources. The two planes were comprised of unistrut and custom folded light baffles acting together to frame the view onto the furniture collection. Individual pieces designed by Adam Goodrum, Justin Hutchinson and Jon Goulder floated above the light source on a reconfigurable system of glass discs and polished metal frames.

The showroom system was designed to be easily demountable and able to adapt to a range of spaces by expanding or contracting the size and depth of the light planes as required. The first installation was at Therry Street in the Melbourne CBD.
